By a ParentEric, an seven-year-old second-grader, was preparing for the Elementary School Olympics. The year before, he had come home with a yellow ribbon in the three-legged race. He was excited about gaining even more prizes this year. He and his friends ran in the school yard to prepare for the races. He hopped on one foot, jumped over bushes and ran once a day for a week before the races. Two nights before the events, Eric confided in his mother as she tucked him into bed. "Everybody's faster than me," he said. "I'll never win a blue ribbon." "Well, you are probably right if you keep thinking that way," his mother replied. She explained how real Olympians not only practice physically, but also mentally -- visualizing their success. Eric started right away. He saw himself at every event, racing ahead and through the finish line. The next day he drew pictures of himself winning all the ribbons! On the day of the Elementary School Olympics, Eric came home with three ribbons -- one blue and two yellow! "Wow, Mommy," he beamed. "I'm going to start visualizing next year's Olympics now!" |
